  • My dear, Red Rose, I am in need of your Father’s money, to help me get out of this obvious miscalculation of justice!

I know you think I am a skunk for what transpired but I assure you my heart is true.

  • “I’ve always loved your eyes, so intelligent, so radiant. Bail me out, Sweetheart?”

Just thought I would let you know that all has not gone well for me since I last saw you. While being escorted to jail my horse spooked at a bear in the woods. He reared up and I fell off. Laying on the ground, a skunk came by a sprayed me. I still have not been able to get the smell off of me. I guess I really was a skunk to you and the bear actually really scared me, I saw my life flash before my eyes as I flew through the air and landed on the ground.

Dear Elizabeth: A red, red rose would pale in comparison to your nurturing beauty and unrivaled compassion for your Coal Valley family. I know it is June and I may not leave the four walls that hold me now. If only your heart would allow me to roam freely- no walls, no wavering, no lack of light. Forgive me and let me be the man you need me to be.

    Dear Elizabeth,
I wanted to let you know that while I have been in prison I have been trying to turn my life around and become a real honest to goodness poet. I am planning to write a book of “original” poems and wanted to know if you would be my editor? After all you are my Red Red Rose in the wilderness.
    Yours sincerely,
    Billy

Dear Elizabeth: Please let me explain. You see, I wasn’t really running away, I was so inspired by your dream that I thought I would get a head start on rounding up support. I was coming back, honest! But Jack always gets in the way.

Dear Elizabeth: May I tell you about this new poem I’ve been inspired to write while in jail? It’s about a bear, a dear, and a skunk . . . and I might include a goat as well. . .
