Devotionals

Here we honor the inspiration of the show, the collection of Christian books by Janette Oke. We hope you enjoy them. We hope When Calls the Heart speaks to people of all religions and that posting these does not offend anyone. Special thanks to Heartie Stacey Blessing Mathews for these lovely devotionals featured in our Newsletter.

When Calls the Heart #Hearties Mini Devotional

Many Hearties have asked about a devotional for our beloved show. So, when a request for content for the newsletter was posted on FaceBook I decided to try writing a brief devotional.

First of all, be aware there are many themes throughout all the episodes that many devotionals could be created. I am limiting it to just one per episode. Secondly, yes this is a devotional and will have bible verses. I’m limiting the verses from the bible until the end of the lesson. There is plenty within the television series to interpret and work into our daily lives. Lastly, of course there is always someone out there that can do it better. I encourage you all to give it a try. A great non-wcth related quote from Gail Devers, “Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.”
Season 1-Episode 1 Lost and Found
There is always a beginning to everything. Our introduction to Elizabeth and the townspeople may have been funny because of the robbery and the way she was introduced to the town. From the back of a buggy with her hair disheveled we see from the beginning that all people are not perfect. But we must live on.

We could spend so much time on describing each character and what loss and what they must achieve to overcome their loss that I don’t have enough time in the day to write about it. So, dear reader, we will take a look at how we perceive people to be. Sometimes the way a person looks is not the way they are.

When Elizabeth jumps out of the buggy we see a person that should be on the next train home to her luxuries. Often people accuse and make their mind up just by looking at someone. We say to ourselves, “What does that person need to be here for?” Sometimes people are so used to determining how a person is that we jump to conclusions quickly.

I am guilty of this. Sometimes I will meet a new person and decide instantly what type of person they are. It’s very similar to how the townspeople treated Elizabeth. From this episode we are reminded of how people look at you and think you are not a good fit. An example of this would be Florence. Within the first few minutes of meeting Elizabeth she has called her a princess. Sometimes it would be great to be called a princess but not the way Florence uses it. Sometimes quick judgments about others can lead to many lost friendships. It’s better to literally take a step back and put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Is the world a better place if you state your opinion even when it’s not been asked?

Now dear reader is your homework-food for thought. The next you feel like quickly judging someone else verbally or in writing ask yourself these questions:

Who needs to know this and why?
Who will it benefit if I say this?
Would anyone think this about me?
Humble yourself before you judge others.

For those of you that enjoy bible verses here are few to help you through your devotional journey. Please note different types of bible versions will be used.

Luke 6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. (KJV)

Matthew 7: 1-5 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

S1-Episode 2 Cease and Desist
Like a wind up pocket watch most families work as an organized unit. The widows of Coal Valley had to endure much heartache and had to make decisions that affected their family. When given eviction notices an opportunity had arisen-could the widows clear a shaft and saved their beloved homes?

Through all the sweat, tears and blood the women worked together. More than once they wanted to give up. And some of them did. A turning point would be seeing Abigail’s faith and strength during this time. What did she have to gain from keeping her home? She has no family living with her. It would have been very easy to move Elizabeth to another home while Abigail started a new life. But instead she stayed and helped clear the rubble.

A great conversation from the show would be:

Abigail: What in the world?
Elizabeth: I know I’m the last person you expected to see here.
Abigail: Actually, I think the truer statement is, you’re the last person you expected to see here.
Elizabeth: Maybe so. But I’m here anyway.

Take a moment to read the above lines but replace Elizabeth with Abigail and Abigail with Cat. The lines above capture a different perspective in this light. No one really questions why Abigail is there.

Now is your homework:

When did I do something for someone else that required no thanks, no accolades whatsoever?
When did I receive something that I did not give thanks for?
Who can I help now?

No matter how small the gift of help is it can greatly influence not only the person receiving but the person doing it AND ultimately those around you.

Act 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. (KJV)

Luke 6:38 Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands—all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you. (GNT)
